St. Petersburg... Take another look

Search and experiment in contemporary art of Saint-Petersburg

The Festival St. Petersburg… Take another look is destined to demonstrate to the British audience not a Saint Petersburg shimmering with familiar print gloss of tourist guides, frequently perceived as a protective zone for glorious past of the Russian culture, but a Petersburg emphatically modern, vivid, informal, seeking, sticking hard to its roots, yet aching to a creative experiment.

The task that faces the Festival is to extend the visions of the audience of contemporary culture of Saint Petersburg, to display the art that often stays in the background of the objects of cultural heritage, academic creative work, or phenomena that have already acquired wide recognition abroad.

The program will include music, theater, dance, cinema, photo, media-art, business conventions, and discussions. Throughout the Festival, modern interpretation of the traditions of the Old Russian church music is found side by side with free-jazz, contemporary dance – with non-commercial fiction films, animation flash meter – with Kharms and Mayakovski’s interpretations. All musicians, actors, artists, and stage directors taking part in the Festival represent unconditional elite of Petersburg independent art. Independent producers, gallery owners, representatives of club industry, and new media also represent the delegation.

The Festival keeps in view not only to make the British’s day with spectacular and authentic performance, but also to establish and strengthen the partner ties between creative entrepreneurs of both countries, favor growth and extension of Petersburg cultural export.

“Contemporary Petersburg art features unique names and phenomena that may be familiar to the foreign audience, and may not. Of course, experts, colleagues, or some advanced fanciers know them. Meanwhile, these names and phenomena are extremely talented and completely authentic. They are very of Petersburg, very Russian, and very European simultaneously. They are connected very tightly with the European and global cultural heritage, having pronouncedly experimental nature. They are not in the least aggressive, yet eradiating immense creative energy. Often, they go unnoticed at the first or superficial acquaintance with Petersburg art. Wishing or not, they live in the shadow of world-known brands of Petersburg culture. This is nothing but natural. However, we want as many people all over the world as possible to get acquainted with what is also a feather in the cap of Saint Petersburg. We are sure, the names and phenomena we present within the St. Petersburg… Take another look are worthy of special attention”.

Dmitry Milkov, a creative producer of the Festival St. Petersburg… Take another look
